The Legend of the Two Wolves
An elderly Cherokee was imparting wisdom to his grandson about life: "There's a fierce battle taking place within me," he explained. "It's between two wolves. One is malevolent – filled with anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is benevolent – embodying joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, generosity, empathy, truth, compassion, and faith. This same struggle happens inside everyone."
The grandson pondered this for a moment and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will prevail?"
The old Cherokee replied simply, "The one you feed right. If I only nourish the white wolf, the black one will lurk, waiting for moments of weakness to seize attention. It will always be angry, in perpetual conflict with the white wolf. But when acknowledged and cared for, it finds contentment, and both wolves thrive. The black wolf possesses qualities like tenacity, courage, fearlessness, strong will, and strategic thinking – attributes I sometimes need, which the white wolf lacks. Meanwhile, the white wolf brings compassion, strength, and the wisdom to discern what's best for all."
He continued, "Son, the white wolf needs the black wolf by its side. To starve one is to lose balance, leading to chaos. To nourish both ensures they serve harmoniously, contributing to the greater good. When both are tended to, internal conflict ceases, allowing deeper wisdom to guide decisions. Peace, my son, is the Cherokee way of life. Those who find peace within have everything, while those torn by inner conflict have nothing."
He concluded, "How you engage with these opposing forces will shape your life. Starve or nurture them – the choice is yours."
The moral of the story is that inner conflict is a natural part of being human, and balancing our internal struggles can lead to greater harmony and personal growth. Rather than suppressing or ignoring negative emotions and traits, acknowledging and understanding them can help us integrate them into a balanced and productive life. The key is to nurture both positive and negative aspects of ourselves, using the strengths of each to serve a greater good.
